Over the past 33 years in the Hague (NL) the festival 'Dag In De Branding' is organised, a festival for Contemporary Music. Artvark was invited to be part of the Branding Ensemble, which played the piece 'DE STIJL' by the famous Dutch composer LOUIS ANDRIESSEN. This piece is inspired by PIET MONDRIAANS paintings 'Composition With Red, Yellow and Blue' and 'Victory Boogie Woogie'. Being part of this ensembe and playing in a for Artvark totally different setting was a pure thrill.
Caroline Bakker, director of the festival: '...I'm truely impressed. We have been fortunate to organize this beautiful festival over the last 33 years and this concert easily enters the top five of all performances during the large history...' Without a doubt a huge compliment.Published on October 31, 2014
Saturday the 12th of July, Artvark played the kick-off concert of day 2 of the North Sea Jazz Festival 2014 in a packed 'Volga' in Ahoy Rotterdam.
David van Lent (NRC):
'...Half way the concert the crowd already shouted loud bravo's after 'Clockwork Blue', a complex composition inspired by the music of Steve Reich. The four Dutch saxophonists complemented each other wonderfully in this piece of minimal music. After that, 'Bank Account Blues' was played, a title that refers to their less fotunate financial situation not so long ago. On a sad rhythm they were howling and whailing desperately with their saxes. They use their horns in many ways, even as percussion instruments in 'Breath In, Breath Out'. Their versitality was rewarded by the audience: a standing ovation in the end...'
Later that evening @ the NSJF Artvark was part of the big band of 'artist-in-residence' bass player, composer and arranger CHRISTIAN McBRIDE, who worked with artists like Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, James Brown and Sting. Together with mister McBrides lead alto player STEVE WILSON, ASQ was the sax section of the band. Another unforgettable experience...Published on October 31, 2014
Every year in the two weeks prior to the North Sea Jazz Festival a festival is held in Rotterdam called 'North Sea Round Town' / 'Noord Zie Jazz'. During this festival all kinds of exciting concerts take place on all kinds of unexpected places. The 29th of June Artvark played live with the film 'HERACLITUS' by photographer and filmmaker LENNY OOSTERWIJK. A very special movie: he filmed the surface of rivers in the south of Holland in all kinds of circumstances and times during the day. The result is enchanting and hallucinatory and the film certainly has an effect on people. A very special project we hope to play more often in the future!Published on October 31, 2014
Artvark played concerts in the JazzCenter in DURBAN, the Miriam Makeba Hall in PRETORIA, Jazzclub The Orbit in JOHANESBURG, Matthews Great Hall in PRETORIA and Hugo Lambechts Concert Hall in CAPE TOWN.
We also did two school concerts for children in the age of 10 to 18 in JOHANNESBURG, as you can see on the picture below. They were singing and dancing to our music in the chapel of their school: a real gospel feel in a Harry Potter-like scenery.Published on October 31, 2014
S-A trumpet player Feya Faku and tenor sax player Sidney Mnisi joined us on stage for a jam in Jazzclub The Orbit! Sidney and Feya are both former bandmembers of Abdullah Ibrahim's band. We love the music of Abdullah, we arranged a few of his songs for saxophone quartet, and play at least one of them each concert.
This night we played all of them....the crowd was cheering, we almost felt like pop stars.....music is a powerful thing in S-A!Published on October 31, 2014
In South Africa Artvark was also a featured guest of the 2014 National Saxophone Symposium. The University of South Africa, UNISA, is putting a lot of effort to make the education of classical and jazz music accessible to all, regardless background. We really like to thank professor Karen Devroop and Matthew Lombard for their never ending energy and effort to make our trip worthwhile. A lot of kids from townships were able to attend our workshops and concerts because the UNISA provided transport and tickets for them. All students proved to be very hungry to knowledge and eager to play.
A huge bonus of our trip to S-A was us meeting the absolute wonderful APOLLO SAXOPHONE QUARTET, a classical trained quartet from Manchester UK. Many concerts we shared the stage playing double-concerts, so we were able to fully enjoy their music. They sound beautiful and also can swing like crazy: top pro's and very good company! Though from very different backgrounds, we found out that we have a lot in common. In 2015 we will write new music for a brand new combination of the two quartets: ASQ vs. ASQ. Tourdates will follow. This is something we are looking very much forward to!Published on October 31, 2014
We just love playing with Claron!
She can sing an aria, and then switch to a raunchy blues right after that.
We played the premiere in 2011 @ the renowned classical music festival: Grachtenfestival Amsterdam. Then followed the JazzClubTour 2012 and the Theatre Tour 2013. Highlights were the Rotterdam Opera Festival, JazzFestival Brugge and the Borusan Arts Centre in Istanbul, Turkey.
This year we played some shows in Belgium, among others the great classical concert hall De Bijloke in Gent, Belgium.

Sunday afternoon the 17th of November 2013 Artvark played a concert in the NORTH SEA JAZZ CLUB in Amsterdam to celebrate the release of their 5th album, 'Bluestories'. Blood, sweat & tears, heart & soul were put generously into this new baby and we're very proud of the result! It was recorded in our 'home studio' Fattoria Musica in Osnabrück, Germany, with heavy weight sound engineer Tijmen Zinkhaan behind the desk. The sound is beautiful and it is the most versatile album we made so far. The blues is the back bone, in many ways with many faces.Published on October 31, 2014
Saturdaynight the 9th of November 2013 Artvark played twice @ 'HET LEZERSFEEST' in Rotterdam (NL). This big annual event celebrates Dutch writers and poets and there were a lot of performances, talkshows & interviews etc.
First Artvark performed with the City Poet of Rotterdam DANIËL DEE. Round about midnight the quartet was reunited with Dutch writer and poet KEES VAN KOOTEN.

In August 2013 Artvark spend a couple of days in Germany in their 'home'-studio Fattoria Musica in Osnabrück. Artvark's last 3 CD's also were recorded here: 'busy, busy, busy' (a project with New Niks), 'Truffles' and 'Sly Meets Callas', feat. the incomparable Claron McFadden. In august we recorded new material for a 'solo' Artvark-CD and a CD-EP featuring actor John Buijsman. BLUESTORIES and the ep POLDERBEEST were released in november 2013, and both are all about The Blues.

Saturday night the 6th of July 'Sly Meets Callas', feat. Lady Claron McFadden, was played in the Scots International Church. Nice detail: Claron has Schottish roots. There was a review by Tim Sprangers in national newspaper 'DE VOLKSKRANT' about this concert (06-07-'13):
"...Artvark played in a church with a big latin cross in the back: 'Holy Spirit Come Down'. The quartet seems to succeed in this task! As alto saxophonist Bart Wirtz was playing a cooking solo, the audience accompanied him with frantic hand claps, like it is supposed to happen with good gospel. With an elated mood and standing ovations as result...The short first 'blues-to-the-bone' set of Artvark was impressive. Un-amplified they cleverly used the acoustics of the church to blend the sound of the four saxes. The dynamic performance is very nice to watch and gives a pleasant sound sensation. The combination with Claron McFadden gave the audience already a beautiful CD and many memorable concerts. This combination was a special request by the Scots Church: McFadden has Scottish blood...'Published on October 31, 2014
'SLY MEETS CALLAS' GOES INTERNATIONAL
October the 7th, 'Sly Meets Callas', featuring the phenomenal classical singer Claron McFadden, was played @ Jazz Brugge in Belgium. Quote from the festival site: "...During four days, we present you a fine selection of some 20 European top jazz ensembles from all corners of the Old Continent...". Venue was the St. Jan's Hospital.
December the 7th, this project was played in Istanbul, Turkey, in the Borusan Concert Hall.Published on October 31, 2014
'Just reminiscing a bit: in the summer of 2012 Artvark played in the Czech Republic @ the Bohemia Jazz Festival in Prague, Plzen and Domazlice.
In Prague, the quartet played the main stage at the big square in the Old Town for a crowd of nearly 5000 people!
Also in the other cities, people came in big numbers to listen to our music.
The line-up of the festival also featured a.o. Richard Bona/Mike Stern, Dave Holland/Kevin Eubanks, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Dee Dee Bridgewater and many others: we had a blast!Published on October 31, 2014
Sunday the 1st of May '11, Artvark played at the Bray Jazz Festival in Ireland, 'one of the best small jazz festivals in Europe' (All About Jazz).
We played in Bray Town Hall, an old monumental building in this seaside town close to Dublin. We played an hour and a half and still it wasn't enough for the audience.
The line-up of this 3-days festival also featured among others Hamilton de Holanda and André Mehmari. This duo from Brasil played the most amazing concert we saw the last couple of years.
Many thanks to Dorothy and George Jacob who make this beautiful high-quality festival happen. Their personal touch and friendliness made it very special to us.Published on October 31, 2014
In Feb '11 Artvark was a part of 'The Messing Orchestra', a huge project of the Danish pop/rock group EFTERKLANG. They played the Cross-Linx Festival in halls like Vredenburg UTRECHT (NL) and Maaspoort GRONINGEN (NL).The icelandic arranger Daníel Bjarnason wrote the charts for the in total 9 horns. For us a trip to play, kind of minimal music.
Later that year in July, this project played @ the STEVE REICH FESTIVAL in Cork, IRELAND.
This festival was held to honor the master composer Reich -who was actually there- to celebrate his 75th birthday. Artvark also played its own music as a quartet on the main stage.
The line-up of the festival featured a.o. Kronos String Quartet.Published on October 31, 2014
